  • We know that diets don’t work long-term… and yet, the New Year brings the tempting diet message to the forefront, especially for those of us in larger bodies that face weight stigma.
  • What is intuitive eating? How can it help us to find Food Peace™?
  • The more we try to restrict, the more we feel chaotic around food, and the more likely we are to experience weight gain and eating disorders.
  • This process of Food Peace™ is SO much harder if we live in a larger body!
  • Diets are this big, seductive fantasy designed to keep us stuck in ideas around what makes us worthy.
  • Let’s find a way to make our bodies acceptable right NOW.
  • Diets also hold this idea of hope for connection and acceptance, which is part of what makes it so tempting.
  • I believe in body liberation and body autonomy… you can do what you want with your body! But I still encourage you, when you feel the pull of dieting, to consider what triggered that thought process. Investigate it, and if the root of it is yearning to connect with others, consider that connection is what you really want, not weight loss.
  • Working towards radical self-acceptance can feel isolating! Remember that part of the seduction of dieting is hope for connection and acceptance to and from others.
  • People in larger bodies are often praised for seeking out weight loss. It can help you feel more accepted and create a mode of connection… but that doesn’t mean it’s the right way forward.
  • It’s possible that diets are trying to help you meet unmet needs of acceptance and connections. Diving deeper into the WHY is so important!!
  • Shame is likely a part of this as well, so investigate that and unwrap the true motivations behind this urge.
  • Ask yourself, what are you really yearning for?

  • If we were more open about our food peace struggles, we’d probably find that many people around us are ALSO struggling with diet culture and disordered eating… we need to promote sharing our experiences as a safe option to find support.
  • Sometimes being a smart, self-aware person puts us in a situation of paralysis by analysis! Reach out for support with the appropriate professionals, either in-person or virtually, as the first step to getting out of our own head.
  • Even if we think we know what to eat already, seeing a dietitian is KEY! They can help us break down our own unhelpful thought processes or behaviors.
  • Work on the perfectionism, and work with a dietitian to brainstorm solutions to your individual struggles or roadblocks.
  • What even is an eating disorder dietitian?? They’re often more in tune with the connection between food and anxiety or food and emotions. Find the expert who’s going to really help you with recovery!!
  • You might go through withdrawal if you struggle with exercise addition or compulsion, so seek out a psychiatrist if there’s a need for an evaluation for medication.
  • Being unable to change a pattern doesn’t mean you’re not trying!! It means that the pattern is so, so strong, and may actually be related to your brain chemistry. This is why getting help from a team of EXPERTS is so crucial, so that they can help you figure out what’s really going on.
  • New eyes can help you move forward!

  • Following any sort of diet DISCONNECTS us from our internal wisdom. The body lets us know what feels good and what doesn’t!

  • Be ASSERTIVE about the way you raise your children.
  • Remember that you are your child’s protector! It’s a parent’s responsibility to teach body peace, rather than body hate, and to stand up against other adults who perpetuate body shame.
  • Honesty builds bridges.
  • It’s not our job to change other people’s minds, but it IS our job to be assertive about our own safe spaces.
  • Values upheld by the family help a child to be self-protective.
  • Make sure your kid knows that THEY are in charge of their own body.
  • Kids have to be able to FAIL. As long as they have a safe home to come back to, we can’t protect them from all of diet culture all of the time
  • Baby-led weaning: use family food to wean kids off of the bottle.
  • We are born as experts of our own body!

  • Food should help us enjoy life MORE, not detract from the experience.
  • The best way to keep yourself bingeing while on vacation is to restrict before, and plan to restrict after. A lack of permission throughout the year leads to “indulging” while away!
  • When you’re on vacation, you’re there to enjoy the food and experience life the way another culture does… not to obsess over what you’re eating and how it may or may not be impacting your body size.
  • How do we work on permission to help prevent this kind of preoccupation about food and body during vacation?
    • Think about a pendulum (courtesy of Maria Paredes)… if we don’t interrupt the calm sway, the highs and lows stay pretty even-keeled. This is what an intuitive, normal relationship with food looks like! If we eat past fullness for any reason, the pendulum adjusts and we eat less at some point in relation to our intuitive hunger signals to make up for it. This is how our body takes care of us! BUT if we look at the pendulum another way, with a disordered relationship with food, we can see violent swings back and forth between restriction and bingeing. SO the only way to stop it from moving violently in the bingeing direction is to STOP pulling in the direction of restriction!
    • Take a hands-off approach!!
    • Check out my blog post to learn how to slow down that pendulum!
  • It’s ABNORMAL to have a competent relationship with food in our culture!!
  • Being human is about following rhythms… the seasons, hunger… we can’t contain these rhythms, but we should trust them!
  • When we step away from diets, it’s NATURAL to experience a feeling of rebellion. The best way to bypass this rebellion is to immerse yourself in this “vacation brain” while you’re at home.
  • Eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full is simple, but it’s NOT easy!
  • Unconditional permission is FUNDAMENTAL to food peace and intuitive eating.
  • Restricting food will only lead to bingeing, and if you want to have a vacation experience free from food preoccupation and filled with cultural immersion, it’s time to take away the food rules and diet talk during your regular, everyday life.
  • Always remember to reach out to an eating disorder dietitian to help you on your food peace journey!
